It's pewter... but translated it's "tin". That picture you sent is the same pic from like 15 web auction sites, like the one I linked... weird?

Pewter can be 99% tin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pewter

Pewter is a metal alloy, traditionally between 85 and 99 percent tin, with the remainder consisting of copper and antimony, acting as hardeners, with the addition of lead for the lower grades of pewter, which have a bluish tint.

Let me explain. My camera wouldn't get a clear pic of the marking on the base of my mug, and that picture from the internet is exactly the same as the one on my mug, so I used it. With a magnifying glass looking at my mug, I can see that the E before "Tain" is there but mostly worn off. Without magnification it looks like a registration mark.

Makes sense... I hadda look at many sites to find the proper translation...
