Pewter buttons, what is this symbol?

Hello, I live in New England and have found 4 or 5 of these pewter buttons with this same design. All found at 1700s areas. Most found at the same location I found my liberty cap button and many other revolutionary era items. Looks to be a cross or map a compass of sorts. Please help! IMG_20200912_170857_039.jpg

Yes definitely 1700s and definitely a compass just no clue what it was for. If just regular people wore them or if they were used for people in war or battle, etc.

Yeap, definitely 18th C & civilian, not sure how you narrow down the date on these other than second half of 18th C.
