Hello All. Began hunting an old orange grove adjacent to an 1890's farmhouse site. Didn't find a lot but this old Peters .38-40 cartridge turned up about 8-IN deep. Is it old? The area is to hunt is a couple of acres and I am not sure if it worth it but if this find is a vintatage piece I will be likely to hunt it some more. Whadd'ya think? Thanks and HH.

The Peters Cartridge Company was established in 1887, and went out of business in 1944. (It was then purchased by Remington, which has used the name Remington-Peters for some of its ammunition products.) So, the absolute earliest your Peters .38-40 casing can be is 1887. Production of that type ceased in 1937 ...but was resumed in the latter part of the 20th-century. Therefore, the odds tend to favor your Peters casing being made sometime between 1887 and 1937.

Some of the info given above is from here: .38-40 Winchester - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello CannonballGuy. Thanks for the great reply. I had previously found the 1887 date but could not match up anything related to Peters' timeline on this stamp. The 1887 to 1937 is a long time span but it fits nicely with some of the other relics that we have found at the adjacent home site so...I guess I have an old orange grove to hunt now. Cool.

Good luck out there.
