Always like to use very deep straw, even in part of the outdoor runs. My chickens love to play around and dig prospect pits in the straw, they each have their own little diggins by the end of the day

There was a study done. One group of chickens on an unlimited duet in light bedding, and the other on a limited diet and deep bedding. Negligible difference between the two group weights and health after 6 months.
