If you look through all the threads about people following treasure legends you'll notice that a lot of it ends up coming down to a hunch that is pulled out of the thin air of whatever research they did. I specifically refer to all the people who "just knew" where the Forrest Fenn treasure was hidden, and a member here who "just knew" there was KGC treasure buried under his house and tore up the floorboards and dug a 50'+ vertical shaft below his house. The latter wouldn't respond to questions as to why he thought there was treasure there (or that deep), and eventually requested that the thread be deleted. I think he also deleted his account. It's gold fever, and has afflicted people for thousands of years. Once you're infected, fatigue and a self awareness of total defeat are about the only thing that cures it.

I’m just saying. There maybe was something or maybe there was nothing. I find it hard to pass a judgement based on the information we currently have on hand.

Rather than discuss what we don't agree on, let us focus, for the moment, on what everyone seems to agree on: There is no documentary evidence that the Dent's Gold exists.

From the 1973 Treasure Magazine article by Sandra Gardner, "A court of Inquiry, held at Clearfield, Pennsylvania, charged Castleton and O’Rourke with treason and theft. The charges were dropped, pending further investigation, as Castleton’s family had much influence high in army circles." I found the piece on the Mt. Zion Historical Society website. Since the author provided no sources, I don't find it very reliable.

So, a logical step would be to trace the yarn back to its beginning. What is the origin story - the initial version of the yarn? This can be a very useful technique when trying to run down the factual basis for a legend.

The size and scale of LE response to any particular crime scene is likely measured by the task at hand. Many hands make light work. This was not a task for a few good men.

Ever see a crime scene being investigated? Standard methods and protocols would apply here too, then one must consider the uniqueness of the environment, remoteness of the location, weather, tools and equipment. By all accounts and in documented images of the scene, there was a lot of manpower being actively utilized for all kinds of work. Then there were police to secure the perimeter. Consider the size of the perimeter. Agents to escort visitors to and from the excavation. Site investigation photographer. Metal detectorists. OPA photographer to interview the agent and video the excavation. Surveyors to guide and measure the excavation.

A common misperception is the investigators acted in a clandestine manner. Nothing could be further from the truth. Other persons present at the site included PA DCNR, PA State Police, PA SHPO, National Park Service, Excavator Operator, and of course, the finders.

It’s kind of like a state transportation department unplugging a culvert on a holiday. Going to have 4 trucks and 5 men standing around while one guy holds a shovel.

The large number of agents was likely due to the nature of the mission (digging up treasure). Every agency wanted in on it and the wild story had already been worked over every day at the coffee pot for months. You know how people get about hidden gold or gold in general.

What is the origin story - the initial version of the yarn?

The Lost Gold Ingot Treasure is the earliest known documented version of the yarn to date. It was a factor of probable cause used in obtaining the Writ of Seizure.

It is a manuscript donated to the War College in Carlisle, PA and no sources could be cited as to who wrote it. The document is said to have been written at the centennial anniversary of the Civil War (1961?) The author includes the statement "There is no use looking for this one, for it has never been recorded".
