Pencil?

I found this piece at a site dating back to late 1700’s. At first I thought it was a knife but it is too soft, maybe lead. Asking around I was told it could be a pencil. I can’t seem to find any info on that but it does write well on paper. Thanks in advance.

Just an update, office museums emailed back saying they have no knowledge of the artifact, but if they learned anything they would let me know.

It might have been used as a pencil. I read that people would take the lead from leaded glass so they would have something to write with.

I'm not sold on it being a pencil. Contrary to what many people believe, lead pencils never were made with lead.

I don't know if what you say is true about lead or not, but I do know that silver wire was used for drawing.
