Stopped at the convenience store to get a coffee on my way to work this morning... The cashier was arguing with some kid, when I got to the counter and realized what it was about I almost dropped my coffee as my heart skipped a beat... I am a regular and familiar with the cashier so I asked what's up... The cashier said the kid was trying to pass counterfeit money, the kid turned around and showed me what he had in his hand... It was actually 2 Morgan's and 5 peace dollars... I asked him if it would help if I gave him the seven dollars for them and he agreed... He bought his cigarettes and went on his way...

I just got home from work and got my first real look at them... Couldn't be happier...

Now all I need is the snow to go away and the ground to thaw so I can get out and detect...

Wow... I truly was under the understanding that this group stood against thieves... Read all of the posts to this thread and you will all see that this isn't true. You will see who would buy your stolen goods from your family and think that it is just ok? ... so sad :(

Im not a thief if you saw him pay with those and you were in line and got up to the counter you would not ask to buy those no one knows they were stolen. When you find a gold ring do you turn it over to the law to the lost and found if not isnt that illegal to keep. I don't think labeling what they did as immoral s just.

It's amazing that anyone could not tell they were not his and we're stolen. I would have confronted him on the spot and called the police...

I am just different than you...

Unless you could

A. Prove they were stolen (which I couldn't) or

B. They were stolen from you and were willing to file a police report.

The police would tell you they couldn't do anything and everyone would go on with their days.

Please keep your self righteous rant to yourself... You don't need to call everyone commenting in my thread undignified thieves... It's rather unnecessary...

Its amazing the integrity of the group here. You either have integrity or you don't. Its that simple... Its sad really... I have integrity.

Good for you! Glad jumping to conclusions makes you feel better about yourself!

There is absolutely no legitimate reason to believe they were stolen.

I am just different than you...

Yes you are. You ASSUME the person was a thief, and you ASSUME the coins the stolen with zero proof. What does your karma say about unjust accusations and unfair condemnation?

I would give other examples of where they may have came from but I would just be speculating and making things up just like the people who say they're definitely stolen

Great score PGHDigger  Right place, right time and well done. I would love a find like this to keep me going while the dirt is frozen solid.

I inherited a mess of peace and morgans. Many people come across this stuff in the same manner and have no idea what it is, so they spend it at face value. Those are the same people that the Coin Roll Hunters love. They turn those old silver dollars into the bank for a dollar each. Then the coin roll hunters buy them for a dollar each. After all, these are still dollars, minted by the US govt. and only worth a dollar.

I have integrity but I also respect others. One of the minimum things people get with my respect is benefit of the doubt.

Wow. Guilty until proven innocent huh? If you did call the cops you'd be the one going to jail if you ''detained'' a person without anything other than ''I think their stolen'' lol

You guys all need to get out and metal detect, cabin fever has set in!
I'm not touching this one with a twenty foot pole, lol
I would love to have found that many silver dollars, especially the Morgans!

If the OP would have Swan kicked the coins out of the "perps" hands, then dialed 911 at the same time while putting a choke hold on the guy, until the cops came. It would have been much better story! The cops get there? Then taze his family jewels for beating up, swan kicking, and choke holding a kid that just wanted a cig!:laughing7:

Then aliens came out of the sky with their probes to rectify the situation! While bigfoot came running past grabbing chips!( because he's hungry watching the aliens make crop circles.)

The cop was so confused, he just gave them to the Op anyhow! See, he just skipped all those steps and bought them.

If you would send them to me I am sure I can tell if they were stolen or not JUST BY LOOKING AT THEM...wait I don't need to see them...they are stolen but you should still send them to me so I can give them back to their rightful owner :) My cat told me who they belong to and I will look up their address with my crystal ball. See problem solved...
Nice save on the coins.

did they pass the magnet test ?--- there are case where scammers come in to a store and try to pass off the fake silver dollar coins and the store clerks refuse to take these coins --unsure if there the Chinese fakes or not --often the scammers will find a "ready buyer" in the store who gladly buys them on the cheap thinking there getting a silver dollar cheap ... only later went the coins stick to a magnet do they find out they been scammed ..the scammers play upon your greed..we had a guy who would act hard up and stay man I have to do it but I need gas money , smoke money beer money will you buy this silver dollar my grandmaw / grandpa gave me for $10 ... it of course was a el fako plated piece of crap ...greedy folk of course would buy it ...only to find out they been had later on--if caught he would play stupid hummm granny gave to me , she musta got tricked long ago..

Here is one for you. About fifteen years ago one of my co workers bought a pinball machine that had been out of service for a long while. Could not figure out why it was so HEAVY until she got it home and opened it. Cofee cans inside with over 3000 silver quarters! Yes 3000, not a typo and yes she still has them.

Interesting discussion here. I think Ivan's scenario is the best response by far.
