Hi
Do you need permission to hunt in say a non-historical township /county/city owned public park? . Seems allot of people hunt public parks . I used to hunt with my uncle as a kid. But I don?t remember where :(? ? he was a landscaper so he had allot of private properties

Reason I ask is I found a old school yard that was converted to a park .I don?t seem to have allot of places other than parents yard. :(
Thanks for your time

It all depends on the neighborhood. around where I live 'Public Park" means just that. Open to the Public for Whatever.? However I have seen on the Forum here that there are some areas where a Permit, or at least Permission is needed. You could ask, A local Cop, A Grounds Keeper, at your local Municipal Dept., or even someone who lives next door to the park. IF they know If you can Search it. ... One suggestion tho. If you ask a Cop or a Neighbor & they say no, go over their head & ask a Grounds Keeper Or Municipal Employee. Sometimes when people don't know for shure, they just say no to cover the fact they DON'T KNOW.? :) I hope this helps ; jeff

Hey Jeff I live in PA also. Chester county...about 30 Minutes outside Philadelphia

I'm up in Schuylkill County.? ? ? ?.......Being down that way, I would say yes your going to need to ask, to search. Larger Population , Right ?? ? ?OCEAN7 is down your way, If / when, he sees this, he may be able to give you a little more details. ........ Have you ever seen anyone else searching your local parks ?

Yea it?s a larger population. I can?t recall seeing any one searching the parks. heh also cant recall seeing that many people searching anywhere for that matter ...I?m sure people do
Seems the hardest part is finding a place to hunt..

If you Havn't seen anyone doing the parks, Joe, then I'd say they would probably be good spots to search. as I said, just run over to the Local Municipal Building & ask if it would be OK. you can also check at your local churches about the Church Yards, and The Schools, this summer. if you have a Local Public Pool, that has a grassy area inside the fence. ask there when you see them prepaiping it for the season. Pools are good for jewelry. GOOD LUCK ; jeff

jjp, call your local park's dept. and ask if it's ok to detect the park's, some require a free permit other's nothing is required.i called mine and found that it was ok to detect all city park's,i then went on line and found that there were over 100 park's in my city, many of them very old ;D.

Doubtful htat your neck of the woods has gone unhunted but here's to hoping you've got good unhunted sites there! An excellent and old part of the country with tons of potential!

Hey thanks for all the tips. I just called my local township and they said
-----NO DIGGING?.

It sounded like the guy didn?t even know. Like no one has asked him before. I think Ill try anyway as long is there is no sign saying otherwise. I always keep the the trash. So ill just show then all the trash I dig.

Hi JJP........

I live in Springfield Delaware County and there is an extensive park system here. I've been told no permission is needed to hunt just plenty of good etiquette. Remember.......Do not accept no from someone who is not qualified to give no for an answer.
BTW..I'm a newbie also and live real close. Maybe we can put our perverbial heads together some time.

Regards,

it MAy have been the person you talked to. I went to the Twp. Building OFFICE, in an area about 20 mile from me, and was told Go ahead. I was there detecting and this Twp. worker came over & said It's not allowed, I didn't argue, I left & went back to the office & was told again, there is no ordinance. ? ? This happend to me at another town. The Cop said he didn't think it was allowed, the Township said "Go for it' a Local Buisness Man said "Not Allowed, I went back to the Twp. The Police were there at the time, they Laughed and said "Ignore him" ?. talk to a grounds keeper or a "Police officer" or a "twp. Office Person". don't take no unless your turned down by all, But don't risk getting caught. ; jeff

Apparantly on Vashon I can not MD at the park uptown and the other one I need a permit which will cost $14. I'm bummed out about Ober Park, the one uptown, but I'll live lol.

People are so willing just to say no and let it at that with a phone call. When you want to know something like this, you HAVE to ask in person. ?Show up ready to detect and walk up to a local groundskeeper and tell him you're there to collect pulltabs, have fun and they'll go along! ?But remember this, call and ask a city manager, park director or in some cases a city councilman and guess what? ?They'll have the opportunity to do what they do best-REGULATE! ?Meet them in person and they'll smell a voter, supporter or noisemaker and yep, that's how they work no matter where you are in a free country. ?

One nearby county has a preserve where detecting is "prohibited" according to everyone you'd ever call on the phone. ?Went there one day and VOILA! ?Some county cops, preserve police and groundskeepers including the resident groundskeeper were there having some kind of get together about the local trouble makers who liked to party there. ?Pulled in and just geared up and started out right in front of them and was talkng and detecting and they all stated there was no ord against it at htis park, just another one down the road apiece had a crabby old groundskeeper that shooed everyone off so let him be. ?No problem, I had fun at that old WWI era logging site where they got wood for gunstocks. ?Seemed like everyone else who had ever called let it go with a no as well.

Always ask. Here in ohio County parks you need a free permit. State parks a i day permit is issued for sand beach areas only. City parks no permit needed some local parks no metal detecting at all. This is all within 10 mile area so always get permission if your not sure

Blech, I was told by the director of the Nashville Metro parks, "no" and had a no digging ordinance cited to me. >:(

All good info thanks?
Root that?s good to know .. I do need a MD partner. I grew up only a few miles from Springfield..

I am in ms never see anyone with md . never been questioned or paid any attention to at schools or parks . one school has yeilded about $60.00 in coins 2 rings in feb !! I asked a parks employe about it , and he told me ,to the best of his knowlege it has never come up . i haul off trash and cover holes .

Hunting parks :P

But thats just me .Everyone on the form has prob. seen that I don't like hunting parks.
So I'll tell you what I would do if you have some concern about hunting a park and you have some time..

Get out of town on some back roads and go meet a few people that own the old house down the road .Just ask permission to hunt the worst they can say is no.

Stop at places that might have one old store at a cross road and just go in and strike up a friendly conversation. You will be surprised how well it works when you just start a conversation that leads to you liking to MD and wounder if they know any places in the area that you should ask about hunting.
Down here we always start that conversation with a good "Howdy"
Don't know how that would work up there. ;D
