Parks and Sports Fields

Around here in johnston county NC what i do is go to city hall and get permisson. All you need to do is ask and explain to them that you will fill back all the holes. I take a pice of cloth about 18 inch by 18 inch and put all the dirt on it. When I'm finished I put it all back and pack it down so no one will hurt their ankle.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR NEW PASSION

Welcome to our world ! Unless the grass is well watered, you need to dig a horseshoe shape flap over the site, leaving the flap connected. You can cut under the sod flap so you can fold it back. This will keep the grass alive. Cutting plugs can show up later as dead spots & make you very unpopular. If the grass is always well watered & the soil is damp all the time, you can get away with cutting a plug. As previously described, carry an old hand towell ( a white one helps you to spot your coin) to put your dirt on, then you can put all the dirt back & tamp the flap back into place. After you do it enough times, someone else will have to pay close attention to know that you have been there. It all comes with practice. Now start digging!! Spotz

I really like ball parks, especially under the bleachers :)

Spotz is right on about leaving a flap attached to the plug to keep it from getting brown. I also use a place mat from Dollar General to put my dirt on while retrieving.

When done right, you cannot tell that a hole was dug.

You don't need to leave one side attached to have the grass grow again unless the plug you're cutting is so small it clips the roots on all the grass in the plug. If the target is more than about three inches deep I cut a large plug and pop it over. It's quick, easy and you cannot tell I was there in a well-manicured lawn. Cutting a large plug does a couple things, you are not probing deeper, possibly damaging better coins or finds and there is a solid root matrix left intact within the plug. But I do not work sites like ballfields in the summer heat, only in the cooler, wetter months off season. And I never wrorry about the "authorities" because they do have real bad guys to chase.
