I found this rusted blob of an old padlock about 8" deep at the base of an old tree in a church yard. I took it home and cleaned the crud off. I got excited when I thought I had found an old military padlock. I sent a brief letter and photos to the National Archives asking for further identification. I got a nice letter back with photo copies from a padlock publication. The N/A told it was a pancake style and that it was not connected to the U.S.Army. The manufacturer made this style, one the had "U S Navy", and another that featured roses. The air was let out of the balloon a bit when I could faintly see "Made in the USA" on the shackle. I fashioned a key from a piece of metal clothes hanger and using plenty of oil, got the locking mechanism freed and now the lock actually works properly. I have found several padlocks but this is the most interesting.
