Returning to the area where a 1-room school house once stood I found a bullet and round ball. The bullet is 2.29"/58 mm long with a diameter of 0.48"/12 mm and weighs 1.45 oz./41 grams. There are grooves left by the riffling inside the barrel. The owner said it may be from a carbine(?) rifle his dad brought home from France after serving in WWI. Based on the size and his recollection, can anyone ID rifle the bullet was shot from?

The lead ball has a seam and dent. The diameter ranges from 0.505" (including the dent) to 0.53" and weighs about 0.53 oz./16 grams. About how old is it?

That is a huge bullet. It’s only a touch smaller than a .50 bmg. Not sure what it came from, but being full metal jacket, and the size, I’m assuming it’s some type of military round, likely a machine gun. I’m guessing that may have been fired somewhere else (Europe), brought home as a momento, and dropped by a soldiers kid at show and tell

ncsuwolf, I agree it is huge. When I showed the owner yesterday I told him I'd hate to be hit by that - heck even someone throwing it at you could do some damage.

Full metal jacket is super common and often cheapest rifle type, hollow points or soft tips are for hunting or self defense at shorter ranges. FMJ tip holds up better at high velocities and is more aerodynamic. Same for the "boat tail" taper at the rear, which improves stability (the "football" remains spinning straight) and carried energy at long range. The hollow at the rear could have been filled with flare material to make it a tracer.

Armor piercing would typically have a steel rod embedded in the tip, or fancy ones might use tungsten.
