Padre Island Treasure Hunting

The dolphins are cool, I used to take the ferry to Port Aransas and they were almost always riding the bow waves. Perhaps your wreck is the one Frenchie was referring to, although I imagine there are numerous wrecks along the coast that have been long forgotten. Watch out for those park rangers!

Sure, come on up, I am near Ogden. I've only been here about a year and a half and am still finding my way around. Read lots of books by the locals, and George Thompson makes some interesting reading. Lots of legends regarding Uintah mountains gold, but how much is fact? Hmmm, there ARE lots of old mines around here. Seems like there are legends of treasure for almost any part of this state. I have only scratched the surface, since I am new to this treasure hunting stuff. All I have found so far is lots of ammo brass, but it is my belief that if you want to find something, there is nothing like looking!

Gunner:
Let me do some research and see what I can find for up there.
If you'd like,
I can send you the info and you can see what the terrain and such is like
And!
"We" can schedule a long trip or two, if you think that the leads are anywhere close to panning out!

Sure, send away! My e-mail on this forum is valid. Not too sure about a "long" trip, though - I do have a day job! But, since I am a US gov't contractor, I have 3 day weekends. Although, if it had been me who found that cache of gold bars near Delta UT, I would have plenty of time to search for more!

I know!
Boy!
Some people just will not take the hint!
Quite simply ....
" Our Govt is corrupt ! "

They'll steal anything of value, believe me!
As to taking a long trip , ,
I don't expect anyone to be able to do that!
A weekend or so, is about all most people can swing!

CptBil,

I'm not too far up the road (Sutherland Springs TX) and I wouldn't mind riding with you down there. I've been up and down S. Padre up to the Mansfield Cut, but never on N. Padre Island. One of my good friends who actually got me started in metal detecting had a very nice collection of those $1500 coins from that beach, and the water via diving offshore. He passed on last year from cancer and took a lot of the site specific info with him.

Anyway...I enjoy your posts, reading about your adventures, and your knowledge. Email me if you get some free time and would like to swing a detector some time.

There are a few notable treasure ship wrecks on Padre Island, three are listed in the image provided. The red dots are just a general location of the wrecks, not an exact spot.

Anyway, I'm not sure whether the spot is in the protected area. I'm not from texas. But this section of coast would be a good spot to look for treasure and artifacts washing ashore.

I am not from the area, nor do I plan to go to texas. It would be cool to go to Padre Island one day though. Maybe find John Singer's treasure. :)

Nice map and thanks for posting it. The North side is part of the National Seashore and the wrecks are in TX state waters. This means you can't metal detect, look for, dive on, or even dream about any coins or artifacts that could be there without being arrested and sentenced to many years in the bowels of the food stand at the park.

HI cptbil:
I live in Harlingen and would love to get a chance to sip a cup of java and discuss going down to the cut with someone who knows the area. I am realativly new to the hobby of detecting but just the chance to go just to see whats to be seen sounds great. Any how just drop a line here if ya want to make a time for this.

Are those ships still there. Any chance there is still Ttreasure. That doesn't look to far from the shore.

A friend and I detected padre at Corpus Christi in early March camped on the beach and drank a bunch of rum, about a mile or two south of the Don Hall pier.We didnt find much except clad and 1 gold ring but my wife insists we go back and take her with for luck so this Sunday off we go for the long drive back from nortwest Wisconsin. We did meet an old time hunter named Kirbo who is 88 and has been huntin the area for years and we had the privelige of viewing his finds at his home in Corpus and let me tell ya that man has been luckey over the years
We would like to head a bit further south and didnt last time cause we were told of trouble down near the border towns, but we will be packin this time so any tips would be appreciated, and by the way she will be huntin the sand and we will have the garrett sea hunter workin the surf

Come on down. Everything is ok and no weapon needed on SPI or North to the cut. Boca Chica to the mouth of the Rio Grande is ok, but you might pack close to the river. Really you should be fine unless you go across the border. Even then it is unlikley that anything will happen, but it cannot be guraantted. No SPI and points North I will guarantee short of acts of God!!! Water and Weather are great here right now!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I'm late on this thread but if folks are still organizing a trip I'd like to be kept informed! That's an area I've been fascinated with for awhile but not many folks I know are interested or want to deal with potential hardships. I have whatever I'd need for personal gear, just short on a good 4x4 at the moment!

I'm not horribly far away either in Big D.

I was down in SPI for a week around Memorial Day recently and it was wonderful weather. But the beach hunting with my ACE 250 was very disappointing. It did not do well in the wet sand or surf and the dry sand appears to be empty of good targets. Either they clean the beach or there are a lot of hunters working it and keeping it clean. It did have the effect of getting me to buy a new Etrac though as I think it will do much better at the beach. I am in the Dallas area also so if anyone wants to hunt around there let me know. :icon_sunny:
