Hi.? I am new, so I will learn as I go.? I found the front shell of an old padlock, but I cannot identify it.? It has no markings or text.? It has four holes where the back was held on.? It also has a fifth hole that has a pin for the shackle to swivel.? The key hole is perfectly round, except for a notch at the very bottom.? Overall, it is a "rounded" square shape.? Maybe a little smaller at bottom than top.? Assuming this is the front (due to the keyhole), the shackle swivels from the top right.? Does anyone have a reference to help me id this?

Looks very much like an old railroad lock. Did you locate it near a railroad? Anyway this is one from the L&N railroad that I found back around 1980.

It was not near an existing or historic railroad. It was found by an old homestead that was also near a "portable" saw mill (the saw dust pile is still there). Also, it is on the river bank and according to old maps and history notes, there was a post office in the area for about 5 years in the late 1800s. It appears on two maps during this period and then disappears.

Thanks by the way for your response. I looked at "railroad padlocks" and saw several examples. I agree with you that this is the type of lock it is. I don't know what brand, and will probably never know unless someone with a reference book looks it up for me. But you have narrowed it down, so thanks. too bad the lock is not complete.

I have one made of brass almost like yours, one side says MAIL no other markings. It is about the size of a half dollar. I could post photos if I knew how.

I would love to see a photo. Mainly because I was told there was a post office there for a few years in the late 1800s. If this came from a post office, I may have found the location!
