I have seen many outhouses right up next to the house.Especially in larger towns where the houses didn't have much property.For houses with plenty of property it is a general rule.
 

I've had success finding privy's around old lilac bushes or other scented trees or shrubs. Thats a good place to start looking.good luck.....

Ive never dug in outhouses Ive always herd that some diseases never die and live in the soil forever. so i guess Ive always been kind of scared to . but i know if I'm looking for an old homesteed (at lest in California ) if i see an old olive,appale,or fig tree. i know I'm probably close.
