Outhouse Holes

I never did one myself, but have been in on some in the past. Mostly old bottles are found. The collectors were very happy with them.

I have not dug one either but I would not hesitate to do so if there were enough time to do it. I have heard stories of coins, jewelry, and pocketwatches being lost in them. Also I am 55 years old and remember my grandfather talking about people in the 30's that were afraid of banks and wanting a safe place to hide their valuables. He said there were stories about people hiding valuables in the outhouse hole by suspending a jar that was secured by a wire or twine and lowered into the "soupy stuff". The other end of the wire or twine was fastened under the seat and near a corner. Come time to make a withdrawal or deposit one would bring a container of water to rinse off the "bank" before opening.

The comedian Red Fox told about his younger brother taking too long in the outhouse and him worried about being late for school. The conversation: Red: "come on, come on we'll be late. Brother: I can't I dropped my coat down the hole! Red: Come on you can't wear it now anyway Brother: But my lunch is in the pocket!
So good stuff did ge dropped in accidently.
