"Orphan Annie"

About a week ago my detector fritzed out...I had an Ace 250, but never purchased a coil cover for it. The coils were worn and cracked, and I tried in vain to fix them, but no luck. I finally bit the bullet, and ended up getting another Ace 250 with two coils, and the coil covers were thrown into the deal this time. Now, every time I swing that coil and scrape, or bump something I can grin, and keep smiling. I like the Ace, and dig most every signal with it. I went out for the first time yesterday with the new detector, and a good friend of mine. The weather was cool and sunny. After several hours of fruitless searching I hit on a dime signal. I didn't think much about it, but realized the value of being careful with a shovel. Another mentor of mine had taught me well! I found this at about 6 inches in very nice soil.....I didn't wipe it, and carefully wrapped it up in tissue, put it in the finger of a glove, and moved on. Later at home we washed it very carefully, and I brought out the red book. What a surprise! I wonder if I'll ever top it. The amazing thing.... I guess it's the first coin I found with the new detector and the only coin I found all day! HH

I added pictures after I put the dime in an ultrasonic cleaner with soap and water... no scrubbing, just the rinse after to take the soap off!

Re: "Orphan Annie"

WOW.

This one should send a STRONG message about cleaning methods. In favor of NOT field cleaning them!

EXCELLENT find--and WELL DONE on the removal of the dirt from the coin. Glad some folks taught you well about wiping them in the field--you saved yourself several hundred dollars of value just by exercising a bit of self-restraint. BRAVO.

This is one of the Finest coins I've seen on Treasurenet in a long while--and certainly in 2008 so far.

Congrats on the fine coin! And, congrats on making the banner....whooooHaaaaa!

Re: "Orphan Annie"

that is one great coin, it appears that there is no environmental damage without looping the coin it is hard to say. yes have it slabbed and avoiding a company that does designate environmental damage if there is any present. you may wind up with a cleaned designation though. great job cleaning, no wiping and ultra sonic is the way to go. If you really need to see a coin in the field pop it in your mouth for a rinse. i would go to a local shop and not say anything about digging and see what they think condition is, if there is environmental damage present they should ask you about it. if they do not say anything, then after they render their opinion, bring it up and see if they can find any. If not PCGS might be the way to go, they are the best slabbing service out there. although NCGS is getting better.

any way you look at you got a great find, and congrats on the banners. slab it and frame it, a treasure for sure.

Re: "Orphan Annie"

WOW! what a surprise it was to see the dime on the banner!!!!!! Thanks for the support and info on the coin everyone. I will be getting it graded and slabbed. I don't know if I'll ever top this one, but hey, ya never know! This really is a fantastic hobby, and a lot of fun too. I have especially enjoyed finding all those ticks, pricker bushes, cuts, bruises, mud, muck, having doors slammed in my face, and other unmentionables that have happened. I guess it's a little like winning a lottery when you've never won much before! :icon_queen: I've only been at this for about a year and a half . I'll try not to get too much into the ego thing, and remain modest! I have to say, over the year I have really enjoyed some of the stories that have been posted on here. It's really a nice thing that people share stories and pictures. This sight is also a wonderful educational tool as well with all the sad, the good, the bad, and the ugly stories and pictures. :icon_study: HH M.

And here I thought, by the title, that it was going to be a post about one of these:

Me too! I found one several years back (Orphan Annie, not the 1844), but not as pretty as yours! I clicked on the banner and I'm glad I did; outstanding find!

Re: "Orphan Annie"

Congratulations! Man, I am so glad that some of us can resist the urge to rub!

Get that one slabbed ASAP!

and dont mention that it was dug when you send it in.

Alan

PS... I just bought a dansco album to put my seated dimes in... my best is an 1876 CC DDO. (rubbed) :(

That coin will fill a nice slot in someone's collection
