Organ Reed?

Yesterday tnt-hunter posted a thread called "classic half cent..." In it he pictured an item he called an organ reed. I found something that looks similar. Is that what this is? Thanks, Gary

right, I've pulled several, yet never more than 2 at the same site. i too have always wondered what everyone was doing with organs lol

Organ reeds, harmonica reeds, grommets, horse tack rivets, spoons and mason jar lids. All of these little devils sound pretty good in old dirt. I’ve found a dozen organ reeds at one cellar hole, but usually only find 1 at a site. Not sure what these deal was 100 years ago with these reeds.

You're right . There were several varieties of squeeze boxes, and keep in mid the number of harmonica reeds we find as well. That was entertainment. Remember the song, "Momma had a squeeze box Daddy couldn't sleep at all ?

AKA concertina.

The harmonica and squeezeboxes of the 19th century were like transistor radios in 1960's, boom boxes of the 70's, Walkman of the 80's, or any of the pocket sized devices carried today. They were the portable entertainment/music devices of the day.

In another century or two, people will be digging the remains of smartphones or iPod's and asking the same question. I'm sure they will grin a little and think to themselves, "Oh, those poor ignorant and antiquated people of the 21st Century...".

When I first started detecting old homesteads I would find these reeds all the time.
At first I thought they might be some sort of seeding tubes related to farm machinery... but now I know better.

I found one at an old school house and assumed it was part of a pencil sharpener with the blade broken off, until I saw on here it was an organ reed. And until I read the posts above, I thought they were talking about a pump organ. Glad to learn every day on here.
