Yesterday tnt-hunter posted a thread called "classic half cent..." In it he pictured an item he called an organ reed. I found something that looks similar. Is that what this is? Thanks, Gary

Sure does look like an organ reed. I did a quick Google search and found this image. Interesting find.

Can we just have a discussion on why there are numerous random organ Reeds floating around in the dirt!

Organ reeds, harmonica reeds, grommets, horse tack rivets, spoons and mason jar lids. All of these little devils sound pretty good in old dirt. I’ve found a dozen organ reeds at one cellar hole, but usually only find 1 at a site. Not sure what these deal was 100 years ago with these reeds.

Not the kind of Organ that sits on 4 legs and you sit to play it .
This kind of Organ played on your chest and squeezed ... much like a Accordion... but not as complex .
A "Squeeze Box"

I guess that makes more sense than them having been scattered via the great organ explosion of the 1851, scattering Reeds from sea to shining sea.

Ya watch Old Westerns TV shows like "Death Valley Days" and you`ll see them played.

You're right . There were several varieties of squeeze boxes, and keep in mid the number of harmonica reeds we find as well. That was entertainment. Remember the song, "Momma had a squeeze box Daddy couldn't sleep at all ?

Please don't forget my personal nemesis, the triangle hay cutting tooth.

AKA concertina.

The harmonica and squeezeboxes of the 19th century were like transistor radios in 1960's, boom boxes of the 70's, Walkman of the 80's, or any of the pocket sized devices carried today. They were the portable entertainment/music devices of the day.

In another century or two, people will be digging the remains of smartphones or iPod's and asking the same question. I'm sure they will grin a little and think to themselves, "Oh, those poor ignorant and antiquated people of the 21st Century...".

When I first started detecting old homesteads I would find these reeds all the time.
At first I thought they might be some sort of seeding tubes related to farm machinery... but now I know better. :laughing7:

A great history lesson from Gary as well! :notworthy:

I found one at an old school house and assumed it was part of a pencil sharpener with the blade broken off, until I saw on here it was an organ reed. And until I read the posts above, I thought they were talking about a pump organ. Glad to learn every day on here.
