We are curious about this but have little hope of knowing exactly what it is. It is nonmetallic. The middle has been punched through and peeled back and missing some as would not fill the void. It is marked on the back Patented July 22 1890 we believe. Thinking it's pewter or pot metal? Think it was a button, jewelry or what? Did buttons come in oval? Any thoughts welcome. Thanks again!

Looks a lot like a grommet to me, maybe misshapen by fire or heat.

Someone smarter than me, and that means most everyone else here could probably do a patent search and find out what it is. It looks to me like it was a whole piece and the center was pushed out from one side.

To me it looks more like a grease seal , maybe off of early farm equipment

I agree. If it wasn't so clean in the front, we would have thought it was shot through.

I appreciate all the input! We might try a patent search.
