A mould for casting lead perhaps?
I've read the Ioway tribe traditionally controlled the pipestone trade in S. Minnesota while the Mesqwaki (Fox) tribe traditionally controlled the lead trade in the upper Mississipi river valley. So possibly it was intended to cast lead items.
It looks as if it's one part of a 3pc mould.
Are there other examples of these types of carvings you are aware of?
UpdateHere are two lead castings made from a mold like this one that was given to me by a fellow Fur Trade hunter from Winnipeg, Manitoba known as Muddyhanz on Tnet.
There are a few crude examples but nothing similar to this one.
Pour in some wax..see what comes out..
Thanks Muddy and Henry for the likes but this artifact has a story to tell and with the options of other interested people and groups it seems that the consensus is that it is much older than thought. I believe that the lead brooches may indicate that it may have originated from Canada. Creed or Ojibwa possibly. JMO. Who knows maybe some day some where some one may have info that will have direction.
Also FYI my avatar is a 200x magnification of human figure face at a 30 degree angle. The image I got is crazy.
