One to Wet Your Whistles Folks! ;)

I was wondering how you knew to crack open that rock. was there something about the shape, the type of rock it was? how did you know you could find something like that in that particular stone? I have found rocks that were somewhat rounded but flat. I tried to break them open but found nothing. Just how do you know what to look for?
Hi h104, I'm guessing alot of the time too!. Unlike quarrystone..with stone from fields, lake and river banks usually somewhat smooth/flat or rounded, if I can see any slight hairlines/crack in the texture, that's where I will split it first. It's usually the weakest point (and sometimes caused by a fossil in the interior)...also notice colors of dark & light grey and brown better my odds too. Don't forget though, my and your area may well be totally different type stone...hope you have some luck! And, don't forget..never try to split/break stone without "Eye Protection"!! Good Luck! ;)

...wow...that's pretty awesome! They probably will have to do some re-writing of history on that! Come to think of it, there's probably a lot of other things in the history books that could stand a rewrite as well....:)

So true...they probably wouldn't know where to start!

Gorgeous scorpion!! I sure am glad they aren't around these days, it sure would deter me from swimming in the ocean, which is something I like to do!! The little land ones give me the creeps well enough without thinking about such large ones. Of course you can just step on the land ones, but I'd probably just run if there were any left in that size!!

Hi gunsil, yes I'd say they were quite the predator under water too. Who knows how powerful their poison was from their telson (Stinger)...I've one large 'stinger fossil' separated/broken off from body...here's the pic. Pretty darn lethal I'd say! ;) 2014-01-22 14.51.00.jpg

...just wanted to say...I got stung by one of those "little" ones while picking up a rock about 3 years ago, never had pain like that before and it lasted a week! Got it on the pinky and it climbed up to my elbow... almost had to go to the hospital but was lucky that most of the venom was left on the stone...but does make a nice story! lol Yours was reminding me of something....remember the movie "Alien"? That little one that burst out and ran around the room.... :O Well, guess I'm going to have some good dreams tonight! haha

I agree DI, wouldn't of wanted to get hit by one! Bigger fellas are 2-3 ft. long, (blind/no eyes, hunted by feel/vibration underwater).

Hi TJE that is an amazing fossil!! I'm going to start splitting more rocks open now that I have seen that!
