An older man used the coinstar today while I was at work (at a grocery store) and had 4 half dollars that wouldn’t go through. So he brought them up to customer services and clinked them a bit and I knew then they were silver from the sound alone, so I bought them from the register for $2 after he walked out. He had no idea why they weren’t going through and gave them up! 3 40% and 1 90% silver halves all mine lol.

Hate to point this out, but are you saying that you took advantage of an old man just to get some silver?

Actually no I did not, he left them of his own free will and once he was long gone I bought them out of the register they were put in NOT from him. He has no idea I even bought them from the register or what they were as he already gave them up and left long before I got them.

Okey dokey.

Guess I can somewhat understand you looking at it the way you did, and today's world, and morals, are far different than the world I grew up in. If I had been the CS person, I would have gone a different route; instead of taking advantage of his ignorance, I'd have explained to him what he actually had, and that they were worth much more than just $.50.

No doubt he would have appreciated the honesty, while building the goodwill of the store at the same time. But that's just me...I'm old school.

Some of the workers at my local grocery store have been handed silver notes over the years...I think I might struggle with that scenario... I'd like to think I would explain the value...and I bet I will run into a situation like that... probably best to follow my gut feelings...ie. how would I feel being on the ignorant end of the transaction...
maybe a case by case basis...in regards to the old man I bet he might have handed them over anyway if he knew the value...if I were to see something in a thrift store I'm pretty sure I would not explain the value of something but that's a different dynamic...I ran into bankers that would collect old coins as they came through...just some rambly thoughts...Not attacking the original post but bouncing my thoughts around
