Hi all. I was supposed to go to a friend's ancestral home for a hunt yesterday. He is the 6th generation in the house. Due to his daughter feeling bad, he called the hunt off. Hopefully later! I decided to go hunt the old coal camp that dates back to the 1860's, for a bit since it's a bit cooler and the overgrowth has died down a little. There is nothing left of the dwellings except stacked stones showing where the miners' lived, outlining the small structures. The depressions are littered with broken glass, shards of pottery and the old square nails. This was my second hunt there, but at a different cellar hole. Some things are recognizable but others are a mystery. The round thing with the rectangular holes reminds me of a variance of a harmonica reed because of the size and shape of the openings. Any ideas? Once I did a little soft clean on the rectangular item, I can make out what looks like the numbers 30, 20, and probably 10. It appears pretty old. These miners were brought in from Europe by the coal company, so it might be from one of their home countries. Coins, we recognize, but some relics provide a little chance to ponder, don't they? Thanks for looking.

My first thought was a harmonica reed.

If you look at the picture with all finds together, there is half a harmonica reed on left side, second item down. I have only found them twice now, but, honestly, my first thought was some type strainer for a pump or plumbing device, but it would have come later if plumbing. There was no water in any of the buildings. Perhaps some part of a pocket watch maybe? If no one knows, I may post just the pic of it on "what is it?". Thanks for your replies, all are appreciated!

The round deal looks like something from a time clock and I'm pretty sure it has 24 squares also our old sprinkler timer had something almost identical.

Very good eye, sir! I counted the holes and there ARE 24! I think you are probably right with the timeclock theory. Thanks much! Now on to the piece that looks like it could have been a buttplate with the numbers?
