It actually pains me to post this but I must...I just found this an hour ago in a field I own. I knew it was a coin as soon as I pulled it but it has been in the ground for so long and is so degraded that I could not make out any detail. When I took it home and washed it off I could begin to see detail. It is Britannia copper from either 1712 or 1713. Unfortunately you cannot see the detain in the picture but under a magnifying glass when damp you can make out the date as well as the figure. I wish it were in better condition and that you could see the detail that I can but here it is nonetheless...

Re: Oldest coin yet...Colonial Copper

thats awesome. dont feel bad about the condition, thats the way old copper coins look when they spend 200 years in this soil too! :'(

Re: Oldest coin yet...Colonial Copper UPDATE WITH CLEARER PIC...

I have posted this coin on the What is It forum as I am now not so sure. After checking it out I now believe that it is an 181? coin.. Anyone here care to hazard a guess?

Re: Oldest coin yet...Colonial Copper UPDATED PIC???

new pic

PBK nailed it right on the head...Thanks again!

While it is not a colonial copper from the early 1700's I am still very happy with this and it is still my oldest find yet!. I did find another smaller coin this afternoon in the same area but it has absolutely no markings that I can see!

Congrats on the oldest coin. Sounds like you got some old land to cover.

I could have swore that I saw a very faint outline of a bust in the first pic.
But I won't argue with PBK...He's the man!
Nice find!
