Re: old weight?

Davef,

The item is solid and heavy. May be wrought iron.

Does anyone know what that type of cross is used for?

Re: old weight?

Will a magnet stick to it? If yes, put in electrolysis, some more detail may show up.

Re: old weight?

Bigcypresshunter,

The piece is magnetic. The cross design reminds me of the Greek cross. Thanks for the help.

Re: old weight?

It's half of a drift anchor, Wal-Mart sells them.

Re: old weight?

Thanks for the replies so far.

The item weighs 11.2 oz (318g). Has anyone seen a fishing weight like this? It is not lead. It is definitely cast iron (magnetic).

I couldn't find any drift anchor that looks like this piece. Could it be part of a kids shoe last as Davef said yesterday?

Does it look old?

Re: old weight?

Is it broken on the top?

Maybe it is one side of a very small cast iron boat anchor. :-\

Re: old weight?

I guess it could be broken but it has been smoothed out over time. I will do electrolysis this week.

I found this old cast iron navy anchor. It looks similar but it weighs 15 Lbs. My item is only 11.2 oz. I am not sure if this is the same thing.

Yes, thats the type. I guess it would be a tiny tiny anchor. :D Its hard to judge size without something in the pic, like a quarter or dollar bill. Do they make boat anchors that small?

It may be part of small kedge anchor. Need to identify markings. Thanks for replies.

I have done more research and believe that this piece is part of a small navy anchor (not kedge anchor). it seems that navy anchors are made 5-lb, 10-lb, 15-lb, all the way to 28-lb. Based on the location where it was found and the design it probably dates from early 1900 or earlier.

Thanks for the replies!

That type anchor doesn't depend on weight to hold, but is designed to dig in and hold in say...sandy bottoms. Monty

USN Stockless Anchors are made up to 60,000 lbs. It does certainly appear to be broken from an anchor and looks like one but at 4x 1-3/4 inches and less than 1 lb. does not seem to match. 11.2 oz. for one side does not even seem to match with a 10 lb. anchor.
