EPNS - Electro-Plated Nickle Silver

Above EPNS is the makers mark. EGW & Son.

Good question, I always thought it meant the silver plating was mixed with nickel??? Really not sure. ???

"E G W & S" = E. G. Webster & Son, Meriden, CT and Brooklyn, NY. The firm used this name from 1886 to 1928.

As Crusader has already noted, "E P N S" = "Electroplated over nickel silver."

Nickel silver is a white-metal alloy which contains no silver. Another common name for it is "German silver."

How big is this item? If it's fairly small, it's probably a pin tray.
