I wrote a little about this before, then got busy. and had to leave it alone
for a while. There is a train track that runs tru my land, this thing is very
old, most of the rail has been removed. I'm finding the rail spikes at reg.
intervols, and i am marking off the direction the tracks ran. the tracks split
and go in two direction, I have found brakes and small parts of rail. In one
area there is lot's of coal, and all kinds of iron parts, from small to maybe
50 or 60 lbs. I found an iron "hook" pitcure a 2 foot fish hook, it's maybe 20
lbs. I know I'm missing a lot with my Garrett 350, and hope to get a Fisher1266X
sometime this summer. I found a few bettons, small about the size of a dime.
Pine trees have grown up in the area, and there are lots of small bushes.
Its slow working the tracks, but with getting an alignment on the tracks,
finding the direction it keeps going, is not to hard. I'm hoping to find some
personal things the men working the tracks may have lost, likes coins, knife
gun, but so far no luck. I know this is not a lost treasure story, but i though
it may be interesting to some of you.

Well, I contacted the Historical Society, and found out that the trains that ran tru my property
operated around the end of the 1800s and the early 1900s. It was a county railroad used for hauling logs to mills and lumber to the train depot. The main line connected the area around McKenney to a depot at Ford Virginia on the N and W Railroad. There were apparently spur lines off the main line, Baltimore Corner follows the old road bed. I'm checking to see what else I can find.
Thanks Monty, I will check out floater's home page.

Mike F. If you find you find 165 year old railroad spikes or other relic's I will be happy to give you scrap iron prices for it. Keep my e-mail address so you can contact me.

The coming or going of a railroad track use to make or break a town. I became interested in RR because of my wife's job. I have given away hundreds of artifacts over the years that were given to us by her employer. I am not a collector so I passed it on to a few friends who were. I have one object I keep and tht is a silver plated belt buckle of the now defunct Katy Railroad. It is inscribed, "Katy RAilroad, gone but not forgotten". The Burlington Northern bought the Katy, ATS&F and the Santa Fe a few years ago. Now they are all Burlington. When I was a child I remember the last of the steam engines use to run right by my house on the Santa Fe tracks. A passenger and freight route from Joplin to Tulsa to Stillwater, OK, and places west. I well remember seeing the smoke, hearing the steam whistle and the rumble of the tracks, and oh yes putting pennies on the track to make charms. Monty

I have the buckle put up somewhere so I won't lose it and of course I forgot where I put it! I'll go through some things and see if it turns up. I saw it not long ago when cleaning out a closet, so when you least expect it I'll put a picture up. Monty

Yesterday I found a heavy iron pipe like thing, maybe 20+ pounds.
appears to have a lid on top. its rusted to it. the other end is bent,
and also rusted together. it's about a foot and half long. Thing is I
was knocking some some of the corrosive rust off, and a oil like
liquid came out. I'm wondering if it's some sort of hydro piece.

Could have something to do with the hydraulic couplers on the cars or even the brakes. How about a photo? I bet one of the mechanics at the train depot would know if I show him a pic. Monty
