While remodeling our farm house that was built in the early 1900's, we found whiskey bottles, parts of lamps, an old animal cookie box and these two parts. We wondered if they might go together since they were found in the same wall. 1. Our first guess on the flat black piece was a fireplace damper, but we decided it was too ornately decorated to be hidden in a chimney. On the back side, the visible screwhead is attached to a thin flexible piece of metal for tension or holding something in place. The knob on the side is metal and is attached to a screw. 2. This part has the shape of a tiny umbrella skeleton. The knob is wood. The piece of wire looped around it is totally free-moving. There is no writing or marks of any sort on either piece. These parts have been conversation starters - and no one has yet figured out their intended use. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have perused this forum many times, and decided it might be fun to post these photos.

Welcome to the forum! The first piece looks a latch, possibly from an old trunk. The 2nd piece looks like a tool used to clean soot out of a flue pipe. Breezie

That is also what I was thinking was Trunk latch, but haven't found one with a tension screw. i also think the umbrella looking thing is actually part of a mixer or grinder.

Yeah, I guess that's an old latch.

I though maybe an old grandfather clock pendulum at first.

Flour sifter?

Some sort of blender (ice cream, butter ???) is what I was thinking. I put the file into a fancy program and came up with the following rendition: ;D The red outline represents a mixing pail.

I think that your first item is the base to an old sewing machine? I'm not sure though. It is similar to the one that is at my house I know that.

ja I get that too.. the knob and the angle indicate that..

However, it would have to be something VERY light....
That wire is THIN..

Yeah, and its only 6-7" tall. ??? What would have been mixed in such a small vessel back then?

The flat piece is a bobbin cover/slide plate from a sewing machine (the plate the needle goes down through). The other item is a yarn winder. Probably for drying freshly dyed yarns.
