Re: Old Silver pocket Knife circa 1850's

The makers mark is American, not English. Thats why it will fool you as it did me. I thought that I had a typical English Gentleman's pocket Knife ! The SilverSmith came from England.

Close but no Cigar ;D 1850- 1860 as per a bud of mine thats a Silver smith. I thought it was Victorian my self, Hal marks say different.

Victorian era relates to a peroid of time, that was the Reign of Queen Victoria 1837 -1901.Its make no difference who or where the Knife was made As anything made in the above era of time is still called Victorian Era.So you say the hall mark says different so that means this knife was made when.1850's is in victorian era.Sorry have i missed something.

Tinpan, your rite to an extent my friend. But ,If this knife was made in Canada, I would call it by its proper designation; ie A classical Victorian piece. Yet this Knife was made in the United states and not in the common wealth country like Canada. When was the last time you herd of a "CSA BELT BUCKLE FOR SALE, A CLASSICAL VICTORIAN PIECE"?

The Americans do not designate the term "VICTORIAN" to their cutlery. How ever, It was made in the fashion of a English Piece. But yes it was made during our late Queens Reign and yes, I collect Silver from all periods, Mostly Georgian.

Re: Old Silver pocket Knife circa 1850's

How cool is that? Silver value, collector value, aestetic value, artistic value, and practical value all in one shebang... NICE GOING! (Though I am sure we will not hear of you cutting any rope with that one ;) )

Re: Old Silver pocket Knife circa 1850's

That's a beauty and not being in the ground preserved the steel blade. Great find.

Re: Old Silver pocket Knife circa 1850's

Gypsyheart, you just maybe rite! It most definitely could be a Ladies Pocket Knife.

Re: Old Silver pocket Knife circa 1850's

It is one nice piece. Victorian period, male, female, whatever....There is a lot to be said for who calls what what and what it was called when and where....I just know that is one very nice knife.
~Nash~
P.S. I hope that made sense to someone other than myself.

beautiful craftsmanship!

Re: Old Silver pocket Knife circa 1850's

Almost the Same Knife, The Grip is the same as what I can see. One blade is different
slightly in shape and the cutting blade on mine is marked "COIN" for coin silver and a eagle with U.S. Strange thing, I wonder if the handles where Imported from England and the blade was forged in the U.S ? There for its a Half Breed ! its a VIC"US! ::) ;D Thanks for the Link bscofield6 ;)

Re: Old Silver pocket Knife circa 1850's

It's a fruit knife for sure as that is why it is silver . The acids in the fruit wont effect it .

Re: Old Silver pocket Knife circa 1850's

No digging and the blades not rusted off. Cant beat that . Great knife Hardy.
