Old School finds & Unique Wheat penny

My son and I searched an older school Sat and Sunday. He actually did 3.5 hrs each day. I only did about 1.5 hrs each day. Was feeling a little under the weather. A couple of older wheats - 1919, 1936 but mostly 40's and 50's dates.

The one wheat penny dated 1956 was very unique. It like doesn't have any rim - smaller in diameter. Also very thin. Date is clearly readable and "one cent" on back very clear. Never seen anything like it.

Looks like you guys had a pretty good day congrats. Maybe that penny was stamped onto a dime planchet?? Don't know for sure just a thought.

Good finds.
Almost looks like you cleaned out the school grounds.
Is the very bottom picure, a picture of two pennies to show the thinness of the other one?
If so I was wondering what the detail was like, I was thinking it may have been ate away by acid or something.
Just a thought.

Great job!
I found a penny like that but it was on the beach so I assume it was because of being tossed around in the sand and salt water.
Happy Hunting. Dan

Re: Old School finds & Unique Wheat penny

The penny looks like it may just be worn, but the coin that looks funny to me is the 1st coin upper left, third pic ???
What kind of coin is that?,, I don't reconize it...
Good luck & Happy hunting~

Leon, that is a Mercury Dime. My son found it and is hesitant to clean it to aggressively. It should polish up fairly well with the right cleaning technique.

As for the acid theory on the wheat penny - wouldn't it be unevenly pitted, corroded, etc.? If half of the coin's copper erroded I doubt you would be able to read the date clearly as well as the "One Cent" on the back.

You two really cleaned up there. Very nice pix too.

Thanks Spotz. Gotta use lots of light for those coin pics. I use one of those 500+ Watt Halogen lights.

Yeah, that was a cool find. Too bad his horn got clipped. :( Has a loop in the back like for a scarf or such.

Bob

Nice finds

Re: Old School finds & Unique Wheat penny

Hey all..The thin wheat is the one in the 3rd pic, last row with all the green gunk on it. Detail is still eminent. Thanks for comments and such and HH

Re: Old School finds & Unique Wheat penny

I'd have to say you guys were well rewarded for your efforts. Nice silver dimes and wheaties. Silver coins mean it needs to be re-checked, so you can get the ones you missed. Good luck on your return trip.

Re: Old School finds & Unique Wheat penny

Awesome finds :o I have found pennies like that too, think its just from being in the ground a long time. not sure what really happens to them though. Is that an old lock?

Re: Old School finds & Unique Wheat penny
