Found this along an old railroad in an old town. Does anybody know what this thing is? It looks iron. Thanks

Jeff of pa is correct... it is definitely the "sliding latch" part of a mortise doorlock. On the opposite end from the horseshoe shaped end, you can see the wedge-shaped projection which slides outward into the doorframe to lock the door, or at least, keep it closed.

I have them on my doors.
they are the type of lock that takes a skeleton key, and do go way back.
my house is somewhere around 1875

Cool, thank you. I find skeleton keys and skeleton key holes all the time, but this is a first.
