It also seems to me there would be more than a few isolated coin finds. Where are the camps and settlements? Maybe Bill in Virgina has uncovered one? :dontknow:
It would be, if any, a very isolated case or cases, but there is a possability that traders did in fact reach the Americas, proberbly be accident but indeed never returned to there home land. The Roman shipwreck in the Bay of Guanabara, near Rio de Janeiro, information about this find is practically non existent. Gary Fretz's synopsis of the "whole story" suggests that the find has been suppressed by the Brazilian government.

At the time the amphorae were confirmed to be "Roman", the large Italian faction in Brazil were extremely excited about this news. The Italian ambassador to Brazil notified the Brazilian government that, since the Romans were the first to "discover" Brazil, then all Italian immigrants should be granted immediate citizenship.

I have never dug anything Roman around these parts, nor have I ever heard of any until this post. I have heard about a few coins dug further up north in the New England area though. I'd like to see Orbitz get his find authenticated so we'll know for sure. If it's real that would be quite a find.
Its real, no questions there. I have seen quite a few posted on here from the US, but I put them down to kids taking them from Dads collection/school show & tell.

Well this historical conversation got quite on fire.
Very interesting stuff there guys...
Here in GR we have many people claiming "the Greeks were the first to discover America" and were able go back to tell about it, but this, too, is highly controversial...

If it was true about the Romans, kudos to them!

Nice find anyway Orbitz.

it was in what appeared to be a clam shell on an old part of a beach, no water just those things everywhere

I almost forgot to comment this info.
What did you mean that it was inside a clam shell?

It looked like a clamshell, I can go to the same spot and take some pics if you want, I have yet to go back, kind of a creepy place

Were all these found at the same place/site....please provide more information , and post more pictures if you can. You said nothing about more possible Roman coins.

Yes, same place, I said nothing about more because I had no idea there would be more, I thought it was just
a stray or maybe someone lost it, but I'm going back tomorrow, I have permission from the owner

Those look like more Roman coins, and you have opened up a can of worms. Just clarify all these came from the same site, including the original one in this post.

Orbitz I would love to see pics of the clamshell-like thing, please go back as soon as you can. Since you have permission this should not be a problem.
And this could go from "creepy place" to "sensational place".

It is possible a hurricane could have come thru and destroyed a house with a coin collection. Our club recently went to Rock Hill SC to try to recover a coin collection from a house destroyed by a tornado. The coins would have been strewn everywhere. I am not discounting the idea Romans came to America, as a matter of fact, I believe the Vikings, Irish, Polynesians, Japanese and others were here before Columbus.

Where do you live? Where did you find this? Even if it's not Roman, who made it, the natives, probably not.
But that doesn't mean it couldn't be another ancient culture like Greek or Carthaginian, know seafarers.

I think he means that he thought all the coins (on the creepy beach) were clamshells.
