Hey everyone, Got out Saturday like a crazy detectorist and hit some old spots. We had 4 inches of that hard packed icy type snow on the ground. But the crazy thing is the ground is still soft.
I spotted a few old chimneys in the woods a few weeks ago. I had to go and check them out. I knew of a old railroad camp in the same woods but it hasn't produced in the past. It gave me one thimble last year. There are lots of targets there and alot of iron. There is one large stone building still standing and about 8 cellar holes around it. There are also some really deep wells in the area. They have big cement caps on them though.
Me and lance decided to hit it some because it was on the way to were I saw the chimneys. Lance found 2 old colonial flat buttons and a savings check token from 1918 almost right away. We were a little shocked but not amazed because the site looked heavily used. I then dug a nice 44D merc there also.
We decided to walk the mile to the spots I saw. When we got there I found 2 large stone chimneys and a big pile of framing all in a pile. Spot looked like it was added onto over the years. Hard to tell with all the snow on the ground. I lost about 4 inches in depth due to the hard packed snow. I did find one 35 wheatie there.
We only spent a hr at each spot. I wanted to test them out for future hunts. They hold promise but the conditions have to be better. Ground was really soft but the snow has to melt. Area is very large and would take a good bit of time to hunt.
Just wanted to make a post. I also ordered a whites 1400 DD coil today from Kelley co. I will take the coil to some good old hunted out spots and see what it can do. I will report back on what I think of the coil. Hope it was a good investment because these coils aren't cheap. Hope everyone is finding something to do with there time now that we can't hunt here in the northeast.
Thanks for looking
