This is my first post. I'm avid collector of anything related to the U.S. Alcohol prohibition (propaganda, prescriptions, unopened bottles, etc). However I couldn't pass on this painting today because of the price ($10).

I know very little on paintings and I was wondering if someone could chime in and provide information on the artist (F? Dillon), possible era, and value?

I think you're correct. Based what I've read, he lived in Michigan for a brief period. That's where this was found.

No, I don't think so. It's neither his style nor anything like the quality of his work. It's also not his signature. He signed his work in a number of ways (and the signature notably differs between oils and watercolours) but none of them look like that. A couple of examples:

There was also a British artist called Frank Dillon (1823-1909) but, again, it's neither typical of his work nor his signature. I think you have another "F Dillon" and probably an amateur from the 1800s.

PS: Welcome to Tnet.

Thank you! Is it a fair say I wouldn't be potentially destroying something of serious value if I attempted to clean this painting then?

I have another painting that probably deserves a separate forum post. Please consider sharing your thoughts once it's posted.

That would be my opinion... but cleaning old paintings is not for the faint-hearted unless you really know what you're doing and have some practical experience.

I'll keep an eye out for your other post and help if I can (note I'm in a different time zone to the US).
