Just received a note back from a web-site on vintage lighters www-vintagelighters.com. They said:

It was probably made during the 1930's by Presto of Canada. It is a common
design copied by other companies.

Daryl

I knew the time frame was right as it definitely is from the Art Deco period. It says made in U.S.A. so it couldn't be made by that Canadian company. It was probably a very popular style and now I'm curious also. I'm wanting one too Lol!

Wow They're called Trench lighters. I like that too. I think that you can look them up on Militaria sites.

Some are calling it a trench lighter but not sure how true that is. Often times one seller copies from another. It seems to have been mass produced and it seems that it could have been used by soldiers. But still not sure of the manufacturer and I havent found a match to the eagle emblem so Im not marking it solved yet.. One thing that I notice is nobody thought it was made in Canada.

Art Deco, Negbaur Eagle Very Thin Lighter. This Deco cigarette lighter was made in the USA around 1940-45. It is a handsome trench art style piece with a pull-apart cover. The lighter has two-toned enameling in fabulous Deco colors of green and black and is very thin with a low profile. It is rectangular with canted corners making its shape octagonal or 8-sided.

This sweet and stylish little lighter, obviously made to attract the ladies, is referred to as the “Eagle” and was designed and made by Harry Negbaur of New York. He made two Eagle designs, the other has the same basic shape but includes a stair-step design. The pull-apart style was popular during WW2 with soldiers and thus the “trench art” name is often used to describe the form. It is a petrol lighter with flint wheel mechanism.

The Eagle lighter is filled by removing the flint holder and filling through the hole where the flint holder was. The flint is replaced by removing the flint holder and spark wheel assembly too.

SIZE: 2 ½ inch x 1 5/8 inch.

MARKS: Eagle (bird), Made in USA.

Hello Bramblefind. I know you are good at searching old newspapers. Do you have any idea what or who the initials F.A.E.L.N could be engraved on these opera glasses? http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/170357-who-f-e-l-n.html Dated Dec. 4th, 1879.

You found great info on the lighter! I saw your opera glasses post and attempted to search for an answer - with no luck. I'm inclined to think it is an individual not an organization. I was thinking maybe an abbreviation for personalized nickname for someone - they did funny stuff like that in the Victorian era. But I don't know... I'll probably give it another try at some point if no one else gets it :)

I was hoping an organization. An individual I think would be impossible to find without more information.

I was hoping an organization. An individual I think would be impossible to find without more information, unless they are famous persons.
