Hello all,
I was metal detecting near the site of where a lost mine is reported to be and found a knife at the base of an old tailing pile. Attached to the knife was some skeleton keys. Closer examination revealed that the knife had symbols carved into it. Now whether it was put there intentionally, dropped by accident, part of the lost mine saga, or just an average Joe with a knife the symbols on the knife are what have my attention. They meant enough for someone to carve them into the knife. My question to is: Does anyone recognize these symbols?
I would appreciate any feedback you can give. I have included a picture of 1/3 of the symbols on the knife to look at.
A little background info on the lost mine:
The miner had found the mine by chance. To save up money in order to buy the equipment he would need he continued to work at a mine several miles away with his friends. One day he became to ill to work anymore. He hiked back to town to get to the doctor. His condition got worse and he passed on. Family and friends worked hard to find the location but gave up.
Speculation:
Man finds gold,
Man looks for signs to guide him back to the location later,
Etches these into his knife as he slowly but progressively makes his way back home,
Man gets to sick to go back to the location and heads for the nearest help,
Man collapses on the way and gets scared that someone will steal his knife while he is sick,
Man buries his knife in a well marked landmarked that no one will bother with (like an old tailing pile),
He hopes to get better and return.
Doesn't happen
End of story, or is it?

Hello golden29, 'your' found knife is only that. Your pic shows a broken handle slab with three of the four studs missing/ broken/ rusted off. Wow- a mans knife is a great find, will you post a pic of the whole knife with a quarter in the pic? Thanks for sharing. HH

If he found the mine, and knew how to get back to where he worked, why would he need to make a map? I guess people do get lost in the world, but there seems to be way too many lost mines, or we want to believe that there are.
