So my curiosity has got the best of me and I'm wondering what a small key like this would have opened ?

I used to start a 1950's Massey Ferguson farm tractor with a key that looked like your small one on the right. Sub 8-)

The one on the right matches what we use at the dealership to open the paper towel dispenser lock to change rolls. Also matches up to my old gumball machine I got when I was a kid. You still had to put quarters in it but could re open it with that to get it back. Once mom found out the paint had lead in it, she took it away from me and never saw it again.
