Old Italian Medallion?

Okay, I found this at my mother's house and when I asked her "What's that?" she said that some old Italian man gave it to her years ago?
I'm just curious to find out more about it...

It looks like it has a tiny mark on the "bale" or eye loop on the top and I can't see what that says, so you can't say if the item is Italian or not and being there are no hallmarks that I can see. We've only have a clue it came from an Italian man, but where was he? He may have got it anywhere... It looks like a sterling charm, but we'er not getting any info on the actual size of it? The inscriptions look to have a personal meaning and that may be very difficult to solve. The image of two cherubs may have a meaning to something.
