Need some help. Anyone know what this could be. Looks like an ID tag. Found 12" underground with no other metal within 200 feet. Has six digits and U.S.A. On it. Found at revolutionary war site former blockhouse. And site used as trading post during the civil war. Any info would be helpful. Thank you!!! image.jpg

Brass? How thick is it? It reminds me of an old carburator rebuild tag.

I am new to this whole think. Normally only look for coins. How do I tell if it is brass. It's heavy for its size. What should I clean it with?

It looks like brass. No rust and dark patina... Could be copper. What did your machine say?

1/8 thick is too heavy to be a carb tag. Your original post refers to Rev and Civil War. This is NOT a soldier's ID tag. I suspect it came off some kind of old farm equipment.

Thank you. And not saying it's from that era or of any military significance. The block style numbers and letters look to be around the civil war era is all. Can I use an ultrasonic cleaner with 70% isopropyl alcohol to clean it off ???

Is that how you clean your coins? If so, have at it! I typically just use soap, water, and a toothbrush. But I rarely find anything worth spending time and effort to clean.

Without other relics near-by to help establish this item, it could be from any time 1850 to 1950. It does look old.
