Found these today.. Anyone got some insight on these? The Iron Ax head if that is what it is was found wedged between two rocks.. Feels like it weighs 10 lbs. The Horse / Ox Shoe who knows. I Dug deep got a signal dug deeper and it disappeared. It was on top of the ground when I finished. Pinpointer failed me

That hammer head would have been used for blacksmithing work. Nice find!

It wasn't ever buried it was wedged among those rocks in the photo. I had to pry them apart which I am sure I will regret tomorrow to get it out. Wonder how old it is?

A friend of mine who is a blackmith still uses his. The shape has stayed the same for many, many years. After heating up a strap of iron, that type of hammer was used to assist in bending or cutting the piece (while still red hot) in half.

That might be a blacksmith tool, but in the context of where it was found, I would suspect that someone was using it for splitting fire wood. The well worn horseshoe looks like it was for a hind foot, and as far as age, the shoe is worn out enough to be unable to tell if it was machine or hand made. Because horses are shod today with shoes that look just like shoes that were used historically, the best way to date a horseshoe would in context with other stuff you were finding.

Beeps,

Don't ya just wonder how some of the things we find got there. Kind of odd to loose an axe but they are found frequently. Why in the world would a black smith's hammer be wedged between those rocks?:dontknow:

Only thing that I can think of is that there used to be something up in those woods in the same spot. That is where I found the hand brake ratchet off of a wagon a few months back. Those woods are fool of goodies. Luggin that thing out of the woods and all the way back to my car was a chore after the days hunt. I feel it today haha.
