Went to an old homesite today that the Jaycees used a few years back for a haunted house trail on Halloween. I figured I might find some clad with all the people that went to it.....and stood around in the dark waiting to get in. And possibly some older coins as well if no one had hunted it.

I tried the usual spots at first.....around the front and back steps, around the edge of the drive, around the big old oaks in the yard, etc......but was finding only junk. The usual pulltabs, old iron pieces, canslaw, and furniture parts. I was thinking someone had already looked it.

I made my way around the side of the back porch and was looking under the edge of the house.......it has no foundation...sits on stones... and I got a quarter signal at 3". I was expecting a washer or something. Then I see this dark looking disc in the dirt I had pulled out of the hole. I pick it up and the first thing I see is a womans head......Im thinking its a Barber quarter.....but its facing to the left. It must be older.....way older. Maybe a Capped Bust from 1815-1838!

But then I see the writing.......ITS FRENCH ::)

I turn it over and its a 1887 1 FRANC and its silver ;D I never expected to find a franc at an old country homesite in the middle of nowhere. These things worth anything? Its my oldest coin yet......not really sure if its my best since its French ??? Should I leave it as is or soak it or something?

Heres a pic......its about the same size as a quarter.

Thanks True......I bet I went around that house 10 times trying to find something else. With the above coin being the first coin found......I thought I was in a honey hole. I did find 2 pennies from the 80s I forgot to mention. They had to have come from the haunted house deal that went on back in 89 or 90 I believe. This place has been abandoned so long theres still an old wringer(?) washer sitting on the back porch......the kind with the roller on top to squeeze the water out of the clothes. I'll probally go back a few times more just to make sure I didnt miss anything.....and I'll take some pics of the place. Its a neat old house.

sparky....I just picked the cleanest spot on my palm to take the pick with. I had just got back and washed them.......actually......my hands are almost black all the time. I weld aluminum all day and with it being winter time.....they stay dry and cracked so the black soot gets down in the cracks and stays.? Makes for some rough recoveries when your digits are cracked and split at the end of the nail :'(

1800's silver... who cares if it is from France..I would bet there is more to be found at this site. WTG
