Went to an old homesite today that the Jaycees used a few years back for a haunted house trail on Halloween. I figured I might find some clad with all the people that went to it.....and stood around in the dark waiting to get in. And possibly some older coins as well if no one had hunted it.

I tried the usual spots at first.....around the front and back steps, around the edge of the drive, around the big old oaks in the yard, etc......but was finding only junk. The usual pulltabs, old iron pieces, canslaw, and furniture parts. I was thinking someone had already looked it.

I made my way around the side of the back porch and was looking under the edge of the house.......it has no foundation...sits on stones... and I got a quarter signal at 3". I was expecting a washer or something. Then I see this dark looking disc in the dirt I had pulled out of the hole. I pick it up and the first thing I see is a womans head......Im thinking its a Barber quarter.....but its facing to the left. It must be older.....way older. Maybe a Capped Bust from 1815-1838!

But then I see the writing.......ITS FRENCH ::)

I turn it over and its a 1887 1 FRANC and its silver ;D I never expected to find a franc at an old country homesite in the middle of nowhere. These things worth anything? Its my oldest coin yet......not really sure if its my best since its French ??? Should I leave it as is or soak it or something?

Heres a pic......its about the same size as a quarter.

That is a beauty!!!! I'm jealous! It's amazing what you will find if you have the right tools! Keep it up! :D

nice coin zeke

CANSLAW! HA! you slay me never heard it called that before but a great term for it! Marvelous and unusual coin! I love finding off the wall stuff like that! Great congrats! 8)

Nice find Frank,I found a 1/2 franc i posted in coins this week.A frenchman must of hid under the building when the spook show started.HH

Thanks guys.......I just wish it had been a US coin.

It had me going for a second or 2. ?The dirt was still clinging to the letters around the edge and all I saw was the big Liberty head. Was hoping it was gonna be a large cent or something....but I still got me some old silver.

I first heard of canslaw on here I believe. Someone had posted saying they were finding a bunch of it.....I was thinking...what the heck is that ??? Is it worth anything? ? lol

If I find an old coin I try to find out what it is worth before I mess with it. If it is a $5000 coin then I won't touch it till I have it professionally cleaned and graded. That might cost $50 so is this coin worth that much? I kind of doubt it but you never know.

Check sales on EBAY and other websites giving coin values for french coins.

Back in the 1700s they carried more foreign coin in the US that anything else. And also continuing into the 1800s the same held true but not as much. There just was not enough coin to go around.

This is a nce find.

Well done.

Nice coin Zeke! Wish I could break the century barrier with any kind of coin....Keep it up~CO2

Great going son!!! You are finding some really good spots!!! :o

Thanks Mom! ;D

I did some looking earlier and saw some on ebay......and a few on some different sites. There......one in fine condition ...you could buy for $4 ::)

Its still cool to break the century mark with some old silver.

Alrighty! Give it the old bakign soda nad toothbrush wash and throw it in your "Hey that's mine" collection. If it's a four dollar coin on e-bay versus a POP(point of pride) dig, I'd go with the latter! Good hunting!

Cool coin there! Silver is silver is silver! ;D

Nice coin Zeke! 8) I think your hunch was right that the place had been checked before as you should have found more coins, esp clad. You dug in and hunted that place real good and got one that some other joker/s missed. Great job 8)

Boy that's a great coin there. Good job!!! I have a question for you. How do you keep your hands so clean and pink? Just kidding.
