Went and visited a friend yesterday who used to do a bit of bottle digging.
He ended up giving me several bottles and this very interesting old light bulb.
The bulb looks to be very thick and hand blown. It is 5.5" long and 2.8" wide at its widest point.
It has a flat base where it can stand upright.
The oddest thing is that the brass cap unscrews and there is a hole in the cap.
Was hoping someone can tell me about this one.
Such as type and age? and why the cap unscrews.?
I dont think it could be a salt shaker. I was thinking maybe the older light bulbs were re-usable, so that one might keep the glass, but replace the element.
Or is it a dummy bulb, that could be used to store valuables.
Thanks

I'm pretty sure what you have there is a candy container.
They come in three sizes.

I remember receiving one of those as a gift I think it was filled with popcorn originally.

sent from my computer by frantically poking at the keyboard with a single finger

Bought one just like it at Spencer's Gift in the mid 70's. It was advertised as a stick incense holder and I used it for that purpose for years. The bamboo stick fit in the hole at the metal top.

I've also seen these as salt & pepper shakers.
The "salt" has two holes, "pepper" just one.

And, I've seen these bottles (without the holes) used for liquors.
But I like the incense stick holder suggestion the best.

It is definitely not a lightbulb.

BTW: The proper name for the brass threaded part (if it were an actual lightbulb - which it isn't) is: Edison E26 Screw Base.
Seven threads to the inch.

Just FYI. :icon_thumright:

We also know it's not a lightbulb because the threads on the glass are not designed to hold a vacuum.
Also, this shape bulb did not exist until about 1930's and by then the glass was significantly thinner.
