Found this at an 1840's farming homestead in central Missouri. Other items of interest found were several flat buttons, Tombac buttons, much cast iron pieces round/cooking utensil in nature, misc. cutlery items, a couple buckles, and a German 1 pfennig coin dated 1833 (fun find). The current owners said the original settlers were German immigrants.
Item is 3 3/4" across, and 4 1/2" tall. Corrosion is too bad to tell if the item ever hinged/was loose at the center. The offset at the end suggests a buckle sort of use. Possibly something used on a horse/oxen?? Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Jules

Horse bit
This pic is from an 1895 Montgomery Ward catalogue . It looks similar to yours . Double cheek bit , used for breaking colts .

It's the same thing that we use today called an English Full Cheek Snaffle bit. I've used these for training but I prefer to wrap the bit in rubber.
