I have a few very old doors in my house, built in the 1740's, that I am wondering the age of. The most fancy door is the one for the master bedroom, that has ornate handles and hardware. I believe that it is pretty old, at least late 1800's, due to some bent square nails in it, and handmade screws. I am just curious if there is a possibility that it could be from the 1700's. I asked the old owners about the doors, and they said that they are guessing that they are probably mean't to look old, but new. Is anyone got at dating old hardware, or even the wooden door itself? The frame around the door is made of a different type of wood, and is nailed in only using square nails.

Wow! I was hoping it would be that old, but was very doubtful it would have stayed up that long! It looks like it belongs in a pirate ship. Thanks so much!

Also, My house was built in what used to be a chestnut forest, though the chestnut tree has been gone from the area for over a hundred years. That could explain if it was made out of chestnut.

Can you tell if it has wooden pegs holding it together ?

All the old doors in my house are around 6'x2.5'. I am not sure about the newer doors, from the 1920's-1940's.

Here are some photos of the panels of the bedroom door.

Very simple/plain paneling on the front door, panels like this on both sides

I think I see a few pegs holding the bedroom door together, and re-enforced with square nails later on. They look more rectangular than the old structural pegs in my barn and house.

My brother lives in an old home from the 1600s in France and all of his doors are much heavier but have latches very similar to that.

I've worked a bit with building conservation, mostly on site paint production. But still, take with a grain of salt - my experience is fairly limited.

Door #1
If this were in Sweden I'd say 1750's-1800's-ish. Maybe imitation painted to look like chestwood?
It was common in Sweden during the early 1900's to have old & new doors re-painted as faux wood.

Screws however is a relatively new thing, perhaps some of the latches and what not might have been added later, nails replaces and what not.
So some of the 'forged' details look newer to me.

The white upstairs doors are early 1900's.

If it looks like it belongs in a pirate ship as you mentioned, well, you know who to ask.

Thanks for the info. The upstairs doors do look a lot newer, and have two wooden pegs in each corner (as do a lot of the old doors in my house). I don't think that the doors downstairs have been repainted, though the hardware was painted black sometime. Thanks for the help!
