Good afternoon, I went for a hunt this morning hoping to do a mop up of a site that has produced a lot of coins for us. I brought the Equinox instead of the Deus this time and took my time listening for and digging any faint, repeatable targets. I was working one small section of the site and got a consistent 19 - 20 on the Equinox. I found what I believe to be a farthing about 10 inches down.

The coin is just a hair smaller than a US quarter and is in pretty good shape. I’m having trouble getting a date, just like in high school. The coin is a perfect candidate for a peroxide bath, I’ll post more pictures afterwards.

You guys stay healthy and happy!

Mike

The old coppers are tough to photograph, the coin looks much better in hand.

Nice old copper Mike, I keep saying we're just about done with that site but then more stuff shows up. I ended up with 6 buttons on the day. The coin Joe found is roached, will never know what that one is. Great to get out in the open air no matter what!

Nice Copper those are some sweet looking coins Im still looking for my first. Well done Tommy

Looks like a farthing to me! Awesome find, farthings are a lot less common than halfpennies! :icon_thumright:

Yep, you got yourself a KG II farthing, probably 1749 which is the most common date due to a large shipment of farthings that arrived in Boston aboard the Mermaid in September 1749.

Beauty farthing! Captured a 1749 with a great buddy up in New England a few years back. Outstanding!

AWESOME!! What great shape! Your coin has helped me to identify one I found this past Saturday. While badly worn- I was able to ID it as a 1749 KGII- but wondered why it was so noticeably smaller than my others in diameter. The bold rim, size and placement of Britania’s shield gives it away! Congratulations on a rare find indeed!

It is George II, and it appears like older bust , the date from the picture was going to guess 1737 but the older bust appeared

"A bust showing an older King by John Sigismund Tanner was used on the farthing in 1741, 1744, 1746, 1749, 1750, and 1754, though the 1754 coin was probably minted at least until 1763. "

Send us diameter in MM and weight, then we can tell if it is half or Quarter penny (Farthing),

Regal Issue half weight is 9.5 -10.5g.

diameter 28mm-30mm

Regal Issue quarter weight is 4.5 - 5.5g.
diameter 22mm -24mm

if below that weight it is a contempory counterfeit, and or if egg shape or thinner than 1.5mm

I don't have the means to weigh the coin and I will tell you that it's slightly smaller than a US quarter which is 24.26 mm. The coin is perfectly round and came from a site where we've found quite a few coppers from the 1600's and 1700's, none of which were counterfeit.

Excellent advice, I definitely have been meaning to order a small digital scale!
