White's DFX, White's MXT, Fisher Gold Bug II
Had a chance to pull out the detector while my son was playing at a park today. Wasn't too excited because I'd hunted this park before and was hard pressed to get a few zincs for my efforts. Today was definitely the exception. Got a deep penny signal under an old tree and these were resting together at about 6". The 1912d V nickel was on top of the 1917s SL quarter and I guess that's why the strange signal. The SL cleaned up beautifully and has full detail and a nice lustre. The reverse shows where the nickel was resting on it in the form of a green crescent. Anyone know how to get that off? I'm sure the coin would grade MS if it weren't for that blemish. The pics don't do it justice cause I got a POS camera, but it is gorgeous. The V is very detailed as well but has that "nickel in the ground for a hundred years" crud. Any cleaning input is welcome. Thanks for the look and sorry about the crappy pics. I for one will never believe a park is "hunted out" again! ~CO2 ;D

Fantastic finds!!? I haven't even found either of those types of coins yet.? And the conditions are like WOW. :o

When you say you were in a drought...how long was that?? Also surprised that you found them under a tree in a hunted out park.? Usually in hunted parks trees are hit very hard - most obvious spot.? I tend to find more in open spaces in those hunted parks.

Anyway congratulations.

Bob
Hey Bob...My last old coin was before school went back into session, so mid-August.? As for your tree question, I have a theory on that, that seems to work rather well for me.? When I say under a tree, I don't go up against the trunk like so many others I see detecting.? I'm not interested in digging a signal out of the root ball!? Instead I find the oldest trees in old parks and hunt the shade line on the North side.? People don't frequent parks until the weather is hot and the shade falls prevalently on the North side of the trees.? Bearing in mind that the tree was a little smaller but probably not pruned up back in the day.? HH~CO2

Pozdrawiam Matejko...
Thanks for the input my friend. I'll give it a try. The coin still has a mint lustre and I was afraid to try anything that required rubbing of any kind. The halo from the nickel on the reverse of the coin is raised and crystaline and I don't think it penetrated the silver. Thanks for your help~CO2

very nice standing liberty and the nickel has great detail too. I also just found a slq in a park that has been pounded. Must be the angle that we hit it from. Sometimes though I'll hit a small area that I know must have stuff and I'll turn and turn and turn and turn and turn and ....not find a thing.........WAy to go and remember
a bad day detectin is still fun right! aloha

Hey CO2! Those are excellent. Don't mess with them. They are worth contacting a conservator. The V nick is a 12 -D & is a key coin. I am in Nashville until Friday when we start driving back to Oregon. I,ll look them up when I get back. Congrats!

CO2,
Awesome finds! That was just an "old coin" drought you were referring to, right? BTW--Sat hunt works better than Sun. Congratulations! MB36

Absolutely beautiful Standing Liberty....I'll go back and look at the nickel.

There is only one method of cleaning coins that's recognized as being safe by the PCGS 3rd party grading service...and that's soaking in a solution of household ammonia and water. Go to the PCGS site and search for "cleaning"....you'll find it.

Don't use any other method...or you'll ruin a beautiful coin....and it's value can easily be cut in half.

Congratulations....I'm just waiting for my first standing that has a readable date. I found 2 slicks this year.

SLQ is the best I have seen comming out of the ground. What a way to break a drought. I wonder how many of the better finds are under trees? Condition wise.

Wow, I'm impressed, CO2. That is the finest SLQ I've seen on this site. The nickle is really nice, too.

I wouldn't mess around cleaning the quarter. It's too nice.
