Detector(s) used
White's DFX, White's MXT, Fisher Gold Bug II
Had a chance to pull out the detector while my son was playing at a park today. Wasn't too excited because I'd hunted this park before and was hard pressed to get a few zincs for my efforts. Today was definitely the exception. Got a deep penny signal under an old tree and these were resting together at about 6". The 1912d V nickel was on top of the 1917s SL quarter and I guess that's why the strange signal. The SL cleaned up beautifully and has full detail and a nice lustre. The reverse shows where the nickel was resting on it in the form of a green crescent. Anyone know how to get that off? I'm sure the coin would grade MS if it weren't for that blemish. The pics don't do it justice cause I got a POS camera, but it is gorgeous. The V is very detailed as well but has that "nickel in the ground for a hundred years" crud. Any cleaning input is welcome. Thanks for the look and sorry about the crappy pics. I for one will never believe a park is "hunted out" again! ~CO2 ;D

WoW! That is one sweeeet slq! A type 1 in that condition is gonna be worth a chunk. WTG! Hope you have better luck if you're gonna try cleaning it.

You have a very nice nickle there, just soak it in olive oil. The quarter is nice. Good job.

You did good!!!!!

Beautiful coins CO2!!!

Congrats!

Nana ;)

Wow those are awsome! That SL gotta be worth $150 at least. Yuo're fortunate to get the V even readable too. Congrats!

gorgeous coins! both of them are so crisp they look like they were both dropped when they were new. awesome finds!

Your luck seems to have changed after you won that old coin. If memory serves me correct you guessed the total of the Indian heads and won a seated dime. Since you got your first coin from before 1900. This SLQ with Great detail and date is a very nice find.

those are absolutely amazing!! ?they do look like they were dropped when new!!
gorgeous coins!!

Great find. I don't know about cleaning the nickle but I use Tarn X to clean silver, it works great and there is no long wait like when using olive oil. But you know what they say about cleaning anything of value. Have it cleaned by a professional or don't clean it at all.
I myself would have to clean it but I can be a clean freak at times.
They are both great finds no matter how you clean them. Wish I had found them.lol

Beautiful Standing Lib!
They don't get any better than that.
You can see where the nickel was laying on the quarter. I call those coin halos. Its fun to find a coin with one of those on them because you know that there is another coin still in the hole.
What a way to end a drought.

Spectacular standing liberty quarter, one of the best I've seen. Sweet date too!

Good Job persisting at the hunt.

I need to put an end to my drought too.

Wow!!!,,, very nice coins, Congratulations...
I think that's one of the best looking (Dug) "V" nickels I've seen...
Good luck & Happy hunting~

Congrats Colorado. It has happened to me more than a few times. You get a starnge signal you proceed to dig and find 2 old coins stuck together. That's probably why those 2 were still there. Those are 2 really nice looking coins. That's a 75.00 quarter easy. I could polish that green out of it. The v-nickle is in very nice shape. Let soak in a olive oil bath. It will even the tone out on the coin nicely.

What a way to end a drought. ? Excellent finds!
A long soak in olive oil and using a toothpick or some other nonabrasive tool
to remove the corrosion should work well on both coins.

Fantastic finds!! I haven't even found either of those types of coins yet. And the conditions are like WOW. :o

When you say you were in a drought...how long was that? Also surprised that you found them under a tree in a hunted out park. Usually in hunted parks trees are hit very hard - most obvious spot. I tend to find more in open spaces in those hunted parks.

Anyway congratulations.
