Old Church From The 1700's

Driving home thru a neighboring town I saw an old church. I noticed it was so still in use and thought about trying to join the church in order to get permission to MD on the grounds :sign13:

Then I noticed a mile up the road there was a vacant piece of land with an old stone wall that had a small sign on it...I pulled over and it read Grounds of First community church 1705-1735....upon further inspection I noticed it was also an old cemetery towards the back.

So this past Sat I awoke and thought what the hell, looked up the # for the police station and called and asked them if that old sight was in fact public property....and they informed me it was, I then asked if they would think its ok for me to MD as long as I stayed far away from any graves. And they said sure why not, they said if anyone complained they would just come by and tell me to leave....so I went out and MD for about two hours. Tons of old nails and I Found a silver bracelet sum girl must have lost the last few years, found an old button that I can't make out cuz how worn it was. Then I found an old brass church necklace charm thingy... I will post pics later.

But I have a question, how deep do you guys dig? I mean sum signals I got were like 6-8 inches down and thats a big hole to dig...normally I dont dig past 5-6 inches

Massachusetts, about 20 min from Rhode Island line.

Re: Old Church From The 1700's

14"?!! Wowzers!! Lucy?! You've got some splainin' to doooooo!! "Ummm....sorry sir, for digging a giant hole in your yard sir.....it showed it was SILVER!!" Hahahaha!! That's commitment right there! I go as deep as my detector will let me go. If it finds a quarter at 8+ inches on the meter....guess what??......I'M GOING IN!! But most of the stuff is in the range that you are talking. Totally depends on the soil condition...how much new topsoil has been added, etc, etc.

Too bad on not finding more at the church. I would have totally expected more finds. I'll bet it's been hunted and hunted and hunted.....but don't give up!! HH!

Work the place hard. You may have to work it for a few weeks (or longer) to find anything that dates to the years of the church. But, if you want some old stuff persistence is the way to get it. Churches were the places where people would gather. There's got to be some good stuff around. As far as depth goes, old doesn't mean deep. The oldest coins I have dug from the 18th century have been less than 5 inches.

You don't even want to know how far I've dug for some targets. I'll dig until I find the target...

The deepest I've found coins was 10-13", but I've dug holes as deep as my arm is long to retrieve a target. The best part is that you could not even tell I was there when I filled it back in and flipped my plug back.

Just dig neat and it doesn't matter how deep you dig.
