Not to poke a dog here - but nice button - it is 100% NOT military. Whether used or not it is a civilian button that could have been worn by a member in the militia. That being said - I tend to find those buttons near spanish sites that date to the early 1700s, the less coned (like yours) tend to show up at typical mid to late 1700 colonial sites. I am not saying it is from the camp, but for me to say that it would have to come out of the middle of the camp itself, not a nearby house site where troops passed by.
 

There was definitely camping outside in the field surrounding the fort.
