Old burial death mask?

Found this a couple of feet under the soil. Was wondering if this was one of those death masks they made of people at the time of their deaths. If it is, why did they take the time to make it, then discard it. Anyone else ever dig one of these up?

What are the dimensions? Is this small head like a child's doll? Did they make doll head's of hollow brass?
